5 ways to make 2023 easier (and generate more cash)

Get them Hooked on You.

In today’s online space, standing out is harder than ever. With the flood of AI-generated content and constant distractions, audience fatigue is real.

Think about it – the moment you unlock your phone, you’re bombarded with content:

  • A new podcast episode from your favourite biz guru…
  • A pre-sale for an offer you’ve been eyeing for ages…
  • A free masterclass promising to teach you how to make 8-figures in 8-minutes…
  • Another Instagram algorithm update…

Talk about information overload.

And if you’re feeling fatigued by all of the marketing messaging you see every single day – imagine how your ideal client feels.

But don’t worry – this doesn’t mean you should give up on marketing. It just means you need to be smart about how you get your audience hooked on YOU and wanting MORE of what you offer.

In this episode of the How I Do Content Podcast I share practical tips to help you create hooks that not only make your dream clients stop and pay attention but take action and step into your world (aka your top of funnel).

Why your hooks matter

In Episode 182: New Year New Client I spoke about the importance of your top-of-funnel messaging – so go and have a listen to that episode too because it pairs nicely with what I’m about to share.

Your top-of-funnel messaging is the first touchpoint potential clients have with you. Whether it’s a social media post, a podcast episode, an email, or a video – you need to grab their attention and entice them into your world.

You do this through your hooks.

For example:

  • Instagram posts: The first line of your caption or the text on the first slide of your carousel.
  • Podcast episodes: The title that pops up when someone’s searching for their next binge-listen.
  • Emails: The subject line that competes for attention in a crowded inbox.
  • Video content: The very first sentence out of your mouth to hook viewers immediately.

In these crucial make-or-break moments (which happen in seconds), standing out is everything.

Otherwise, you become lost in a sea of same-same content – which I KNOW you don’t want.

How to create hooks that make your ideal clients bite

When crafting a compelling hook, always start with your ideal client in mind. Your hook must be:

  1. Relevant – Speak directly to their problems, desires, or outcomes.
  2. Interesting – Avoid overused phrases and create curiosity.
  3. Different – Stand out from the crowd with fresh angles.

Crafting hooks using three key perspectives:

Whenever I’m crafting my hooks, there are three perspectives I think about from the point of view of my ideal client:

  1. Problems – Address what your ideal client is struggling with right now. Example: “Creating endless content but not getting results? LISTEN UP!”
  2. Desires – Highlight what they truly want to achieve. Example: “Why creating content creates money 💰”
  3. Outcomes – Show them what’s in it for them. Example: “This one is for my fellow introverts #igotyou”

Remember ALWAYS come back to your ideal client – what would be super enticing for them?

Be different: stand out with unique hooks

If you really want to grab attention, avoid cookie-cutter hooks like:

  • “5 ways to do X”
  • “Do you want to make more money, save time, feel better?”

Instead, switch things up with a fresh angle:

  • Instead of “5 ways to build a successful business,” try “Things I don’t do – and my business is still successful.”
  • Instead of “How to use ChatGPT to 10x your content output,” try “More content won’t help if your messaging sucks.”

The second option from these examples are all pieces of content I’ve created. And spoiler alert – these were some of my best-performing content.

When you break it down – it’s not about coming up with content you’ve never seen before, it’s all about different angles that hook people in.

Test your hooks before publishing

So when you’re coming up with your hooks, ask yourself:

  • Would you stop and take notice?
  • What content catches your eye when scrolling?
  • Which emails do you open and read?

Observe what works on you and then adapt it for your audience.

Your hook = the gateway to your marketing funnel

The stronger your hook, the higher the chances your ideal client will step into your funnel – whether that’s:

  • Following you on Instagram
  • Signing up for your freebie
  • Booking a call
  • Buying your offer

It doesn’t matter if you create the best content in the world – if your hook isn’t compelling it won’t matter.

So if you want your dream clients to stop and pay attention – spend more time crafting your hooks.

Remember it’s the entry point to your funnel and determines whether someone becomes a lead or just another missed opportunity.
