Welcome back to the 3rd and final part of my 3 lessons from 3 years in business series.
I SO hope you’re enjoying this mini series – I’ve loved diving deeper into these lessons.
If you haven’t listened to part 1 or 2 – press pause on this episode and listen first!
Ok let’s dive straight into lesson #3…
Now if you’re a long time listener you’ll know how much I’m an advocate for sustainable business practices over the good old shiny object.
The online space is rife with these little bastards.
I see so many business owners get distracted and spend their time and energy trying to keep up with all of the new trends and “must have” business tactics that’ll fast track your business growth to infinity and beyond and if you’re not doing them, well why are you even in business?!
Now I say this with my tongue planted firmly in my cheek.
Since when does every Hary, Ron & Hermione on the internet need to be successful 5 minutes ago? It seems like there’s a competition to see who can crack the 10k followers, the 10k months or the 6-figure year the fastest.
But you’re not Usain Bolt.
And you’re putting unnecessary expectation and stress on yourself when you try to chase the shiny objects (aka the new business tactic that’ll bring you fame and fortune).
You don’t want to go from your goals and jump straight to your tactics and completely miss out on the strategy in between. Because then what happens is you feel like you’re doing all of the things BUT you’re not seeing the results.
So if you’re wondering what the fuck is the difference between a strategy and tactic – I got you.
Your strategy is your game plan. It lays out what you ARE and AREN’T going to do to achieve your goals and it gives your business a clear strategic direction.
Tactics are the specific activities you use to execute your strategy.
You don’t have to try every single strategy or tactic IF IT DOESN’T WORK FOR YOUR BUSINESS.
Remember Clubhouse?
That lasted a long time didn’t it. Droves of businesses flocked to the platform but it fizzled out pretty quickly.
It’s about being intentional and making sure your goals, your strategy and your tactics are linked and working TOGETHER!
So trying to get more views on your latest Reel → is that REALLY building your business?
ESPECIALLY if you don’t have a strategy or way to turn those views into something better.
Because spoiler alert – those views on your Reel mean fuck all if they don’t convert into clients.
Correct me if I’m wrong but…
So spending your time trying to find the secret to more views seems like a waste of time if those views aren’t bringing in more clients.
In your business you need a way to attract leads (aka humans), build a community, nurture that community so they turn into paying clients, and most importantly serve and retain those clients where possible.
And if you don’t have that in your business you need to get support to help you to do so – otherwise it’ll turn into a passing fad too – just like Clubhouse.
Harsh but true.
You want to invest your time, energy and money into setting up rock solid business foundations.
Things that actually matter such as:
Remember what you’re seeing online is heavily curated.
And the business owners who are seemingly an “overnight success” have often spent years (and many failures) building up to this level of success.
I’m all for people sharing their wins and their incomes BUT it’s helpful to remember there’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes that you don’t see.
So yes, let those “success stories” inspire and motivate you but NEVER hold onto them as a comparison tool for where you should or shouldn’t be in your business journey.
I know I’ve personally fallen into this trap and I find it helpful to remember I’m unique and brilliant and magical and I’m exactly where I’m meant to be.
It takes a huge amount of bravery, resilience and self belief to do what we do.
Or sink it.
If there are things in your business that aren’t working – it’s up to you to acknowledge that and shift the strategy back on course.
As I mentioned in part 2 – there’s never a point in business where everything magically works 100% of the time.
The online space is forever changing so you need to be adaptable to change shit up when it’s not working.
Which is EXACTLY why you need solid as fuck foundations so that the world doesn’t come crumbling down when things inevitably change.
It makes it a shitload easier to navigate business life let me tell you! I’m so thankful for past Tahryn for being smart enough to focus on those fabulous foundations – I encourage you to do the same!
Lesson #1: There’s no one right way to do business
Lesson #2: You’ll never reach a point in your business where absolutely everything is rainbows, red wine and border collies
Lesson #3: Focus on building rock solid business foundations over endlessly chasing fads
