5 ways to make 2023 easier (and generate more cash)

AI-Generated Content Won’t Sell If You Don’t Understand Your Audience

AI-generated content?

Everyone’s using ChatGPT to write content right now – but is it actually helping or hurting your message?

From Instagram captions and sales emails to entire launch plans, AI is the go-to for saving time and “working smarter.” But here’s the kicker: most of what it spits out sounds like everyone else on the internet.

If you’re constantly rewriting AI-generated content, this episode of the How I Do Content Podcast will show you why it’s not working — and what to do instead.

AI-Generated Content Won’t Sell If You Don’t Understand Your Audience

Why AI-Generated Content Often Falls Flat

Here’s the truth most marketers won’t tell you: AI can’t fix what you don’t understand about your ideal client.

And by “ideal client,” I don’t mean a basic demographic breakdown like:

  • Women aged 25-40
  • Loves oat lattes and yoga
  • Lives in the inner suburbs

That kind of surface-level info won’t cut it.

You need real HUMAN insight – the beliefs they hold, the desires they’re chasing, the objections running through their mind the second they land on your sales page or consume your content.

Because if you don’t know that – no prompt in the world can save you.

AI Is Only As Good As What You Feed It

Even when you give ChatGPT context like: “My ideal client wants to make more money and save time.”

…it’s not enough.

That input is so vague and universal that it produces cookie-cutter content – the kind that sounds like it was scraped from a Pinterest board in 2017.

If you want smarter, sharper, and more sales-driven content, you need to go deeper than surface-level desires.

Surface-level input = surface-level content.

The Right Way to Use AI in Your Marketing

Let’s be clear: I’m not anti-AI.

I love using ChatGPT — when I’ve already done the strategy work.

Here’s how to use AI like a pro:

  • Know Who You’re Talking To. Not just “online business owners,” but what they’re thinking, feeling and resisting right now. What’s stopping them from saying yes?
  • Apply Buyer Psychology. Are they a fast action-taker, an overthinker, or an emotional buyer? Each one needs different messaging and it changes how you prompt the AI.
  • Give Real Context. Don’t ask ChatGPT to “make it more engaging.” Tell it the who, why, and what they need to hear. That’s what turns generic output into high-converting copy.

Ask Better Questions, Get Better Content

So if you’re not getting the content you want from ChatGPT it’s not about trying different prompts – you need to get clear on what actually matters to your ideal client.

So start here with these questions:

      • What beliefs are keeping them stuck right now?
      • What have they already tried that didn’t work – and why didn’t it?
      • What are they Googling at 2am when they’re completely over it?
      • What results do they secretly want, but don’t feel safe saying out loud?
      • What would make them say “OMG were you in my head?!”

Because those are the answers that will actually make ChatGPT an asset instead of a waste of time.

Stop Blaming the Tech. Start Understanding Your People.

If your content sounds like everyone else’s, the issue isn’t the algorithm – it’s that you’ve skipped the foundational work.

Ideal client research is not optional, it’s not boring, and no, you don’t already know them if your content isn’t converting.

Your messaging, your marketing, your sales all start and end with the human on the other side of the screen. So stop treating them like a checkbox in a Google Doc.

Because saying “I don’t have time” for ideal client work?

      That’s not a reason. That’s a cop-out.
