The Faceless Marketing Trend: Why Visible is Always Best

Something I want to do more of on the How I Do Content Podcast is share my thoughts on the different messaging and marketing trends I see in the online space. 

As someone who consumes a lot of content – I love observing how brands and businesses are marketing themselves online, and also seeing what strategies, tactics, and trends are the “it girl” of the month.  

I LOVE marketing when it’s done well. Even though I have a degree in marketing, and I know as a marketer there’s always an element of strategy in what brands are doing – when they nail their marketing and their messaging…TAKE MY MONEY!

On the flip side, sometimes I really hate the icky marketing strategies, tactics, and trends I observe. And they usually contribute to why you don’t enjoy your time in the online space or marketing your business too, right?!

I’m forever on a mission to make messaging and marketing magic again! 

This episode of the How I Do Content Podcast is a short and sassy one – I’m ready to break down one of the biggest online marketing trends right now: FACELESS MARKETING.

I’m going to tell you what I really think about this trend.

But before I do…

 

WTF is Faceless Marketing?

In a nutshell, it’s content (mostly Reels) where, instead of featuring the face of the business owner, the imagery is focused on other things.

If you go to the Reels tab on Instagram right now and start scrolling, you’ll see what I mean. 

You’ll see someone reading a book and drinking their coffee cup – but their face is cropped out of the shot.
Or a hand stirring their juice with a glass straw – their face nowhere to be seen.
Or someone walking – their pointed high-heeled shoes the focus of the shot. 

It’s basically pretty aesthetic stuff minus human faces.

The Faceless Marketing Trend: Why Visible is Always Best

Now you might be thinking that, as an introvert, this would be exactly the kind of marketing I’d love…

…but you would be 100% WRONG! And here’s why…

As an introvert, YES, I TOTALLY understand that sometimes you’d rather rot in a cell in Azkaban with the Dark Lord than:

  • Show your face on stories or your feed
  • Record Reels with YOU as the focus
  • Talk about yourself 

Been there, done that! 

Except…

Here’s the problem with Faceless Marketing…

I couldn’t tell you one single thing about any of the Faceless Marketing accounts that are all over the ‘Gram.

I don’t know:

  • Who they are
  • What they do.
  • What they sell.
  • How they can help me.

From my perspective – they’re invisible to me. They blend into all the other Faceless Marketing accounts online. 

Sometimes I see the same footage on repeat with the same messaging, and I do a double-take to check if they’re actually even different accounts – and they always are. 

Why would you purposely try to be invisible? 

For women, I know it often comes down to self-worth and how you feel about yourself. Society has told you that you need to look and behave a certain way to be successful, and that if you’re a little different then you’re “too much”. This in itself is a whole nother conversation…

From a business perspective, though, being invisible is a sentence worse than Azkaban. 

If you’re invisible to your ideal clients, they’ll keep on scrolling and, ultimately, they won’t buy from you.

I KNOW you didn’t start your business to create some pretty content and make no money. 

So while it might feel easier to go down the Faceless Marketing route – to not show your face or tell your story, or to delete all traces of your personality from your content…

…Believe me when I tell you it will be nearly impossible for you to cut through the noise (and stand out amongst all the other faceless brands) and make it clear to your ideal clients why they need YOU and your offers in their life RIGHT NOW.

To attract your dream clients, sell out your offers, and make all of the magical money you desire – you have to stand the heck out.

In 2024 you can’t be hiding behind a faceless brand.

Yes, it might look pretty…
Yes, it might feel easier…
