Burnt Out? Before You Change Your Business Model, Do This
A hot topic of conversation in my world right now is around burn out and business models.
More specifically, that stage in your business where you know something has to change (maybe moving away from 1:1 work or trading time for money) – but the thought of pivoting feels overwhelming.
You feel stuck in the messy middle: exhausted, craving change, but scared to lose income if you let go of what’s currently working.
Sound familiar? You’re not alone. I see this with clients all the time – and I’ve lived it too.
The truth is, before you change your business model, there’s something far more important you need to fix first.
Naming the Catch-22 of Burnout
This stage of burnout in business model decisions feels like such a catch-22, doesn’t it?
On one hand, you’re stretched thin and craving change. On the other, shifting your model triggers fear:
- What if your income drops?
- What if people don’t buy the new offer?
- What if you make the wrong move?
So instead of evolving, you stay stuck in burnout.
I’ve been here myself. When I decided to evolve my signature program, Micro Messaging, I knew I couldn’t scrap everything. I had to make space strategically. That meant taking on fewer 1:1 projects so I could create something new without putting my income at risk.
Blowing up your business model might feel like the quickest fix, but it usually creates a new set of problems.
Why Changing Your Business Model Won’t Fix Burnout
When clients tell me they need to stop 1:1 and launch a group program, or shut down services to build a course, I always dig deeper.
Most of the time, the model isn’t broken – it’s the messaging.
If your audience isn’t connecting with your current offer, shifting to a different model won’t solve the problem.
- Switching from 1:1 to a group? If your messaging doesn’t show clear value, it won’t sell.
- Launching a course instead of services? If your messaging doesn’t make it the obvious choice, people won’t buy.
Messaging bridges the gap between where your clients are now and where they want to be. It positions you as the go-to person and creates demand for your work – no matter the delivery model.
Practical Shifts to Avoid Burnout in Business Model Growth
If you’re experiencing burnout in your business model, here are three practical shifts that will change everything:
- Listen to Your Clients
Use the exact words your clients share in DMs, sales calls, or surveys. If your marketing doesn’t reflect their language, it won’t land.
- Define the Real Shift You Create
Get specific about Point A → Point B. What are your clients’ late-night frustrations? And what does their desired outcome actually feel like once they’ve worked with you?
- Pressure-Test the Buying Decision
Instead of asking “What makes me different?” ask: If someone was ready to buy today, what would tip the scales in my favour?
Burnout in Business Model Fixes: Why Messaging Is the Foundation
Burnout isn’t fixed by blowing up your business model. That just trades one set of problems for another.
The way forward is fixing the foundation – and messaging is at the core. When your messaging actually connects with the right people:
- Your offers feel easier to sell
- Your business feels lighter to run
- You create the space to evolve
If you want support with this, my Obvious Choice Offer Training is the best place to start. In just 22 minutes, you’ll learn how to take your offer from overlooked to obvious choice with messaging that lands.
