Why Repeating Your Messaging Works: The Psychology Behind It

Why Repeating Your Messaging Works: The Psychology Behind It

So let me take you behind the scenes and play out a conversation that happens on repeat with my clients.

They’ll say to me: “But Tahryn, I feel like I’m repeating myself and saying the same thing again and again and again.”

My response: “Yeah, that’s kinda the point”

And while I’d love to do a mic drop and make this the quickest episode in How I Do Content Podcast history…

Obviously I’m going to explain myself and tell you why repeating your messaging isn’t a bad thing, in fact it’s actually essential if you want it to have the intended impact – attracting Beyonce-level clients on repeat.

So if you’re feeling like your messaging is getting a little repetitive and you’d rather cast The Cruciatus Curse than talk about your offer one more time – you need to keep listening.

The first thing I would say to you here is…

repeating your messaging<br />

The psychology is stacked in favour of repeating your messaging

And the research backs me up here – I mean obviously I’m gonna bring the receipts!

Firstly we have The Mere Exposure Effect. It’s backed by over 200 studies and tells us that familiarity creates preference.

Meaning people don’t need to consciously remember seeing something for it to work on them. The more they’re exposed to a message, the more they trust it and feel positively toward it. Even subconsciously.

And memory literally works through repetition. Each exposure strengthens neural pathways and information becomes easier to recall when it actually matters – you know like when someone is ready to buy.

You want more receipts?

Well if you ask any marketer, they’ll tell you about The Rule of 7. Even though it’s from way back in the 1930s – it tells us that people need to encounter your message at least 7 times before they buy. Obviously modern marketers say it’s upwards of 20 now.

Then there’s Google’s 7-11-4 rule. 7 hours of interaction, across 11 touchpoints, in 4 separate locations before a buying decision.

So if you’re still doubting me – even after I’ve shown you the receipts…

Let me bring out some more.

Like how:

  • Instagram shows a post to roughly 5–7% of your followers. That’s fewer than 1 in 10.
  • Facebook organic reach sits around 1.2%.
  • Instagram’s organic reach dropped another 12% in 2025

So when you feel like you’ve said something a thousand times, your audience definitely hasn’t seen it that many times.

The bottom line is repeating your messaging isn’t annoying – it’s the mechanism by which your messaging actually lands.

The more times you repeat yourself and your audience sees your messaging, the  more you see a significant, measurable improvement in brand preference and trust.

The people who feel embarrassed to repeat themselves are letting their own hyper-awareness (they’ve seen it 50 times because they made it) masquerade as their audience’s experience (who’ve seen it once or twice).

The research is unanimous: repeating your messaging pays off, so say it again. Then say it again.

Now obviously

Not all repetition is good repetition

Because there is a fine line between good + bad repetition.

Good messaging repetition is saying the same thing in different ways.

So if you feel like your messaging is repetitive it’s probably because you ARE simply repeating the features over and over. Instead of actually selling your offer you’ve made the features of your offer the centre of your marketing messaging.

And this IS a problem!

Because if your message never evolves or adapts, people might stop paying attention…

AND you’ll ALSO bore the shit out of yourself and that’s not the vibe or the mindset you want when it comes to marketing and selling your offers. You want to feel excited because then it makes it a whole lot easier to show up and talk about your offers.

So how can you talk about your offer without simply repeating the features?

The messaging you DO need to repeat

Right now you’re looking at your messaging very one dimensional, when in reality, effective messaging is about angles. So looking at it from different perspectives and understanding what needs to be repeated, where it needs to be repeated and why.

So if you zoom out and think about your business and the different elements where messaging comes into play, you’ve got:

  • Your brand
  • Your offers
  • Your marketing
  • Your sales system

And then there’s the different elements to each of those.

Which is again why I’m always banging on about how important your messaging is – because it literally impacts all of these parts of your business AND ultimately everything you create as a result.

So when it comes to, let’s say your offer, the messaging you DO need to repeat includes:

  • Who the offer is for
  • The problem your offer solves
  • The transformation – so what happens as a result of someone purchasing your offer
  • Why this transformation is important to your ideal client
  • Why they should prioritise THIS offer over something else they’re considering
  • Why they should buy from you

What changes is HOW you say it: the words, the angles, the story, the proof, the format.

Strategic repetition of your messaging isn’t just about keeping your audience engaged; it’s about getting them to take action. It’s why engagement should never be the only metric you focus on.

When your messaging is clear, consistent, and varied enough to stay interesting, it sticks in people’s minds. And when they’re ready to buy, guess whose name comes to mind first? Yours.

That’s the power of repeating your messaging. It helps your audience feel confident in their decision to choose you because they understand who you are, what you offer, and why it matters.

So don’t be afraid to be repetitive. Most of the fears that come up for business owners are ego-driven.

But I know I’m ok to feel like I’m repeating myself if I’m making repeat sales – what about you?
