I’ve spent the month of March travelling the East Coast of Australia on my 40th Birthday Tour.
Last year I thought to myself “you only turn 40 once Tahryn” – so why not spend the entire month of March on the East Coast visiting my favourite city and spending time with some of my favourite people.
Now this wasn’t a full holiday because I also decided if I was going to be away and doing cool shit I may as well time it around the launch of Micro Messaging.
Because if there’s one thing I know to be true – it’s that people love and engage more often with travel content than they do launch content. So why not make the most of the engagement bump?
So in today’s episode of the How I Do Content Podcast I want to give you an insight into what it really was like to run my business while travelling – behind the delicious food photos and all the cool shit you see on social media.
So let’s dive in.

The 40th Birthday Tour Plan
The plan was to:
- Fly from Perth to Melbourne on Monday 3rd of March
- Spend birthday and launch week in Melbourne with my sister and brother in law
- Fly from Melbourne to Gold Coast on Monday 10th March to visit my friend Amee.
- Fly from Gold Coast to Canberra on Monday 17th March and then drive to Batemans Bay to visit my friend Bec
- Drive back to Canberra on Monday 24th March and then fly back to Melbourne to spend my final week with my sister and brother in law
All while still working and all while launching Micro Messaging.
How I Prepared to Run My Business While Travelling
The best part about running an online business? As long as I have my laptop and Wi-Fi, I can technically work from anywhere.
But of course, successful travel-and-business requires a little more than “winging it.” Here’s how I prepared:
- I had a clear launch plan – My Micro Messaging launch was mapped out, so I just needed to execute.
- I packed my podcast mic – While I wanted to pre-record 4 podcast episodes, I ran out of time. So I recorded them on the road (hello, wardrobe studio at my sister’s house).
- I stuck to my podcast process – I’ve got a repeatable weekly podcast process, and I made sure to carve out time to script, record and publish each episode – even with a cyclone on the horizon (more on that soon).
- I adjusted my expectations – I knew I wouldn’t be working full-time hours. That meant being super intentional with my time and prioritising high-impact (aka sales-generating) tasks.
My Work Schedule While Travelling
Even though this was a travel-heavy month, I was still working a few hours each day. I intentionally kept my calendar light on calls (only a handful during launch week!), and focused my energy on:
- Writing and scheduling launch emails for Micro Messaging
- Repurposing launch emails into Instagram posts and stories
- Having sales conversations with Wizards considering joining Micro Messaging
- Scripting + recording podcast episodes
- Creating content for my done-for-you marketing clients
Some days were more work-heavy, others were spontaneous adventure mornings followed by laptop afternoons. The key? Prioritising needle-moving tasks and leaving the filler tasks behind.
Spoiler: while I enjoyed the looser schedule, I am a structure-lover at heart – so I doubt I’ll go full digital nomad anytime soon.
What Happened When Plans Changed
Here’s the plot twist: Cyclone Alfred decided to crash my party.
Just one day before I was supposed to fly to the Gold Coast to see my friend Amee, a once-in-51-years cyclone hit. I had to cancel my AirBnB and change my flights – and suddenly, my tour plans were flipped upside down.
Thankfully, my sister and brother-in-law in Melbourne welcomed me back with open arms – so I spent an unexpected bonus week in my favourite city, with two of my favourite people.
Disappointing? Yes. But if running a business has taught me anything, it’s that you have to be flexible and let go of what you can’t control (like surprise cyclones).
The Best Thing About Running a Business While Travelling
Let’s be honest – mixing travel and business isn’t just a logistical challenge. It can also be creatively invigorating.
New places. New people. New food. New ideas. Being on the road gave me a fresh spark of creativity that I channeled directly into my launch content. And bonus – travel content always gets more Instagram engagement than launch content, so I leaned into that sweet spot of business + behind-the-scenes travel updates.
Hot tip: your audience wants to come along for the ride. Share the real, the messy, the spontaneous – not just the strategy.
But Wait… Where Was Maggie the Menace?
Now to answer the most important question I’ve been asked…
Where was Maggie?!
This was the first time I’d really been away from her since Ned died, and I’ll admit – I was nervous. But honestly? She didn’t even miss me. Rude.
Maggie lived her best farm life for the month, staying with my parents 3 hours east of Perth. She played with their workdog Billi, terrorised the family cat Charli, and absolutely milked the attention. She’s a Bolt – so obviously, she was spoiled.
Final Thoughts: Should You Try Working While Travelling?
Absolutely. If you have the chance to blend travel and work, take it.
This trip gave me a much-needed reset after a massive six months. It reminded me that you can be both strategic and spontaneous. You can launch while you live your life. You can run your business while travelling – if you’re willing to plan, adapt, and stay focused on what matters.
