So, naturally, your brain spirals into the usual suspects: “Is it my messaging? Is it my audience? Is it the algorithm? Or does the universe just hate me?”

One of the most common questions I get asked is “How do I know if it’s my messaging, my audience, or the timing?” In fact one of the Wizards on the Waitlist for Micro Messaging asked me this exact question last week!

So in today’s episode of the How I Do Content Podcast I’m going to share what my answer was to them so you can start doing a little investigating on your own as to why your content isn’t converting into clients.

Here’s the truth: there’s no one-size-fits-all answer as to why your content isn’t converting into clients.

It depends on your business, niche, audience size, and how long you’ve been showing up.

But I can give you a clear way to diagnose what’s really going on – so you stop second-guessing yourself and start focusing on the right moves.

Let’s break it down.

When It’s a Messaging Problem

Here’s the scenario:

  • People are opening your emails
  • They’re watching your stories
  • Maybe they even leave a few “love this!” comments.

But they’re not clicking, not buying, and not asking how they can work with you.

👉 That’s a classic messaging problem.

Signs you have a messaging issue:

  • Your content uses vague, generic phrases like “transformation,” “support,” or “feel empowered” – without showing your audience what that actually means for them.
  • You’re focused on what your offer includes (calls, modules, bonuses) instead of what it delivers (the transformation or result).
  • You’re not addressing your audience’s real hesitations, doubts, or objections.
  • You sound just like everyone else in your industry. (Goodbye differentiation, hello invisibility.)

🪄 Messaging magic tip:  Your messaging should make your dream client feel seen, understood, and compelled to act now – not someday, not eventually, but right now.

Because if your messaging isn’t moving people to action?

You don’t need more content – you need better messaging.

When It’s an Audience Problem

Now let’s say your messaging is strong – you’re clear, you’re specific, and your content is spicy.

But your DMs are filled with:

  • People asking to “pick your brain” for free
  • People with 57 excuses for why now isn’t the right time
  • Lurkers and low-commitment followers

👉 That’s an audience problem.

How audience issues happen:

  • You’re attracting people who love your vibe, but don’t actually need or want your paid offers.
  • Your freebie or lead magnet is too broad, pulling in curious lurkers instead of serious buyers.
  • Your content gets attention – but not from action-takers or decision-makers.

And here’s the twist – your messaging still plays a huge role here.

The words you use, the angles you lean into, the stories you tell – they all act like a signal.

And if that signal is unclear or too generic? You’ll attract people who are curious, but not committed.

🪄 Audience tip: Great messaging not only attracts your dream clients — it also filters out the wrong people.

When It’s a Timing Problem

Sometimes it’s not your messaging or your audience – it’s just the timing.

Here’s what most business owners don’t want to hear – You might be showing up, but not long enough, not consistently enough, or not with enough clarity for your audience to actually trust you yet.

We live in an instant gratification world. People want to post once, go viral and make 7-figures in 7 minutes.

But brand trust isn’t built in a week. And right now it takes even longer simply because trust is at an all time low. 

Signs it’s a timing issue:

  • You recently pivoted your niche, offer, or ideal client and your audience is still adjusting.
  • You’re just starting to show up with confidence after months (or years) of hiding behind vague messaging.
  • You’re posting inconsistently, making it hard for people to build trust in you.

In short: timing matters.

Don’t expect a flood of sales when you’ve only just cast your first spell. 

🪄 Timing tip: If you’ve been showing up consistently and clearly for less than six months?

Keep going. You’re still laying the foundation.

BUT if it’s been more than six months of consistent, confident showing up… and still crickets?

It’s not just timing anymore – it’s a messaging issue.

How to Diagnose the Real Reason Your Content Isn’t Converting

Here’s how I recommend you investigate why your content isn’t converting into clients:

#1 Start with your messaging

  • Is what you’re saying clear and specific?
  • Are you showing your dream client why your offer matters to them right now — not just describing what you sell?
  • Are you speaking to both their desires and their hesitations? (If your content is full of buzzwords, vague promises, or surface-level language – this is your first clue.)

#2 Then check your audience

  • Who’s engaging with your content? 
  • Are they your dream clients? Or people who are curious, but not committed?
  • Are your freebies and content filtering for the right people, or are you trying to attract everyone and ending up with no one?

#3 Finally, zoom out on your timeline (and be honest)

  • How long have you been showing up with consistency, clarity, and confidence?
  • Have you given your audience enough time to trust you and your offers?

Because the truth is, if your messaging is clear, and your audience is aligned – time will take care of the rest.
