Income claim messaging in the online space has gotten out of hand…
So, in this episode of The How I Do Content Podcast, I talk about it – because, siriusly, someone has to say it! I made a promise to you that I’m going to share my thoughts on the different messaging and marketing trends I see in the online space.
I want to preface this by saying that I believe that talking about money is NOT a bad thing – I love money and it’s a big driver for me. It’s also super inspiring and shows me what’s possible in business.
Plus, from a marketing perspective, I also know using income claim messaging works because it speaks to this desire many people have. Marketing after all is 100% psychology.
This isn’t about whether income claim messaging works or not…
I’m simply getting bored of seeing so many people make income claim messaging their ENTIRE message and the ONLY WAY they market their business, themselves, and their offers.
So let’s talk about it!
What is income claim messaging?
If you go to your discover tab on Instagram and take a little scroll, it won’t be too long before you see it (if you don’t see it immediately)…
“$10k month this”…
“$30k month that”…
“I made x amount of money in x amount of days”…
That kinda messaging.
A couple of years ago, people chose the 10k month messaging as their go-to income claim message. But we’ve quantum leapt to the $30k, $50k and $100k month these days.
I know what you’re thinking – “but Tahryn, you use income claim messaging”… And yes, Wizard! You’re 100% correct!
The reason I like income claim messaging is because it’s a clear and specific identifier for your ideal clients. And you know what I say about clear and specific messaging → it leads to sales!
BUT (and it’s a big one) income claim messaging is NOT my entire message and I don’t lead with it in every single piece of content. I even actively try to find other ways of communicating why I’m the wizard to support you.
I’d be lying if I said I didn’t think about making it my main message. Because it’s often the people who do make it their entire message are the ones who are making bank (or at least they appear to be).
Here’s the problem with income claim messaging
My friend and forever inspo Tracey Spencer shared a post with me recently. It said – “creators rely on income marketing when they don’t have real value to share”.
And I tend to agree – I think it’s lazy marketing.
If every single post is revenue-related – what else you got?
I also find that it’s usually done in a way that gives zero context or value.
When I’m sharing income claim messaging, you better believe I’m giving you more than, “I just had a 50k launch, how awesome am I?!”. I’m sharing the dog’s honest truth about what it takes – the good, the bad, the many tears, and the lessons.
Income claim messaging gives you the impression there’s a secret spell that can help you hit 6-figures in 6 minutes without lifting a wand.
So it can draw in people who want a lot of money – but who also aren’t aware of the work actually involved.
The reality is, the secret to a 10k month or a 6-figure business (or whatever your income goal is) is doing the fucking boring work on repeat. Believe me when I say – there’s no secret strategy that only they know, or that’s unlocked just by signing up to work with them.
And, as I mentioned in the last episode about Faceless Marketing – the more people who make income claim messaging their main message, the more it blends in and the more everyone starts to sound EXACTLY the same.
You blend into all the other accounts claiming to help you make 10k in 10 minutes. Which is exactly what’s happening in the online space right now!
The online space desperately needs wizards who aren’t afraid to be different. To own their unique blend of magic and share it with the world.
It’s totally possible to share your magic consistently without over-relying on income claim messaging
In fact, my recent launch for Micro Messaging is proof.
I achieved my best-ever launch sales-wise without making income claim messaging my ENTIRE messaging!
Yes, it was part of my secondary messaging because I know people DO want to know if it’s going to help them make money in their business. BUT I focused on the other benefits of micro-messaging before speaking to money.
The truth is, I don’t need income claim messaging to make money.
I know how to create desire, demand and differentiation in my messaging and marketing without it.
I actively avoid using it where possible because I don’t want to sound like every other Harry, Ron & Hermione on the internet. I’d much rather be known for my creativity, my strategic thinking, and my values as a human over how much money I make.
And I want to work with magical humans who feel the same way and who resonate with me.
That’s why I’ll always be the person who’s honest and transparent about what it really takes to build a successful business. It might take me longer – but I’m here for the long term, so I’m committed.
So there you have it – my thoughts on income claim messaging.
