How to Restart Your Messaging & Content Creation After a Hiatus

How do I restart my content and messaging when I’ve been at a standstill for about 3-4 weeks?

I was asked this question by one of the wizards on the Micro Messaging Waitlist – and it’s also a question I get asked a lot when I’m teaching messaging and content in my programs.

So OBVIOUSLY I wanted to share my answer with you too!

You might find yourself taking a break due to a planned absence (such as holidays or maternity leave), you might find yourself burnt out from trying to keep up with the Instagram machine, or you might get so busy working in your business that you stop marketing altogether. 

In this episode of the How I Do Content Podcast, I share how you can restart your content and messaging after an online hiatus.

First up, I’m going to get honest with you, and let you know why I think you’re making it a bigger deal than it needs to be – yep, I go there!

 

Why you’re making it a bigger deal than it needs to be…

What I’m about to say might sting your ego a little bit…

And I say this with so much love because I want to see YOU out there, sharing your magic with the world…

And I say it as someone who has supported 100s of magical humans with their messaging + marketing…

I KNOW you’re overthinking it.

Restarting your messaging and content after a break doesn’t have to be such a big deal – but you’re making it that way! 

You know when you have something on your to-do list that you keep putting off and putting off, and then, when you FINALLY do it (and it’s a quick fix) – you wonder why you didn’t do it sooner? 

You’re stuck in a cycle of overthinking (what should I post, what should I say, how do I explain my absence) so you keep putting it off and putting it off – you’ve reached a point where you’ve created this torture cell for yourself and made it this huge big deal when it doesn’t need to be. 

What would happen if you just called Taylor up? Aka what would happen if you just do the thing and post the damn post, or send the damn email, or share the damn story? 

Spoiler alert – the world will keep on turning AND you’ll feel so much better! 

Plus, honestly (and this will sting a little) – most people won’t even notice that you’ve been on a hiatus, or, at the very least, it’s not going to be a huge deal for them. 

Why? Well everyone is busy and they have their stuff they’re focused on. So the fact you haven’t been sharing content online for a little while – probably doesn’t rank super high on their list of priorities.

I don’t say this to hurt you – I say this to give you a shift in perspective, and to free you from the overthinking that’s holding you back. 

 

It’s no longer enough to simply show up and share content consistently – that’s the bare minimum. 

Messaging, marketing, content, and sales are fundamental parts of running your business – you’ll never not have to do them if you want to create the business you truly desire. So you can’t be holding back! 

I recently shared that the last 12 months have been pretty tough for me from a mental health perspective – but I never stopped marketing and selling. Weekly podcast episodes, emails, blogs went out. I kept selling my offers and launching new offers. I continued to work on, tweak and uplevel my messaging. Because I KNOW how important consistent messaging and marketing is now AND in the long run.

I’m not here just for the quick wins and short-term gains – I’m here to build a successful AND sustainable business. 

This is not about never taking a break – it’s about not delaying your return because you don’t know what to say or what to post or what to sell. 

I know you’re probably thinking “Tahryn, for the love of dogs, just tell me what I should do…”, so I’m going to give you some options – because at the end of the day, it depends entirely on you, your business, and your vision. 

So consider this a ‘Choose Your Own Adventure’: messaging and marketing edition.

How to Revive Your Messaging & Content Creation After a Hiatus

Step 1 –  Check in with your business and your goals

Before you restart your content and messaging, my recommendation would be to do a little pulse check to see where you’re at so you can then decide what your next steps are.

There are different micro elements that come together to make up your messaging, and then your messaging is what determines the content you need to create. 

So some things to get clear on first are:

What’s your overall goal for your business + marketing in the next 60 to 90 days? 

Do you want to…

  • Grow your audience?
  • Nurture your audience? 
  • Convert your audience?
  • Prepare + prime to launch?

Who is your ideal client?

  • What does their current reality look like?
  • What are they currently navigating, experiencing, and/or feeling?
  • What are they dreaming of instead?

What offer are you selling in the next 60 to 90 days?

  • Is this a new or established offer?
  • What’s the awareness level around this offer, the problem it solves, and why you are the wizard to support your ideal clients?

When it comes to your marketing:

  • What channels are you utilising?
  • What frequency can you confidently and consistently maintain?

You want to make sure you’re sharing messaging and content that helps you to be seen, heard, respected, AND paid by Beyonce-level clients. 

Moving and creating with intention will make sure you’re moving towards the business you truly desire. 

Step 2 –  Get clear on your unique micro messaging

Based on your goals, what’s happening for your ideal client right now, and what offer you’re selling – what’s YOUR unique money-making micro-messaging?

For example → if you want to prepare + prime your audience to launch a new offer, your messaging and content will be very much focused on:

  • Creating problem awareness around the solution your offer provides your ideal client (so they can self-identify they need it!) 
  • How your offer takes your ideal client from where they are now to where they want to be
  • Why you are the wizard to support them to get there

The goal of your micro messaging is to clearly and confidently position yourself and your offer as the ONLY solution to the problem your dream clients want to solve.

When you’re coming back from an online hiatus, what you share first depends on these 2 steps! 

I know that might be the most annoying answer of all time – but the reality is that there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to business, and obviously the same applies to your marketing and messaging.  

I have a feeling, based on what I’ve shared, that there are two more questions that could pop up…

Do you need to explain your hiatus?

Again – this is completely up to you and what feels good for you.

I ask you this:

  • Do you want to explain your hiatus? 
  • Or do you not want to explain your hiatus?

What comes up for you when I ask you that? You’ll know which to choose.

There’s no right answer or better option – you either say “I’m back, here’s why…”, or you just get back into it and start sharing content again with no explanation. 

What if you just wanna post the damn thing? 

Sometimes, you just gotta stop overthinking it and simply share a piece of content – and then build momentum and clarity from there. 

Here are 3 classic, always-in-style kinda posts I’d recommend sharing first:

  • An intro post that you can use as a pinned post on your profile
  • A post about why you do what you do
  • A post about how people can work with you

This is a simple and strategic starting point – the most important thing is to just do it.
